Volunteer Activities on Trail

Volunteering on Catonsville Rails To Trails

Volunteers are always needed on our trail systems which include the #8 Streetcar Path and the Short Line Railroad Trail.    CRTT works with volunteer groups to provide meaningful, productive volunteer activities.

Types of Volunteer Activity

Community Service Hours – If you need community service hours, we can tailor a plan that allows you to work flexible hours.  Contact Maureen Sweeney Smith at 443-326-5474.

Group Activity – If you have a group of 5 or more people and would like to volunteer for a project, contact Maureen Sweeney Smith at 443-326-5474.  Please read the Organizing Your Volunteer Event section below.

Organizing Your Event

Here are a few things to consider before organizing your activity:

  • All of our trails are in woodland areas and the possibility of coming in contact with poison ivy is a real possibility. We conduct most of our volunteer activities between November 1st and April 1st  when vegetation and vines are dormant.  CRTT accepts projects all year long, so if you have a good idea, we would love to discuss it.
  • If you are planning to plant trees or flowers, you must plant species native to Maryland. This can be a fun research project for your group.  Click here for a list of plants and trees that are native.
  • If you are planning to plant trees or flowers, you must have a one year maintenance plan that includes weeding around plantings and a reliable person to water the plantings during the spring and summer months. We have seen too many planting die due to lack of watering and unfortunately, CRTT does not have a staff to handle the follow up.
  • CRTT has gloves and some tools.
  • Here’s a list of the top 7 ideas for volunteering on the CRTT Trails
  1. Pick Up SticksAll Age Levels – Between Nov. 1 and April 1, we need volunteers to help stack fallen limbs and sticks along the sides of the trail for our chipper crews.  This is a great activity for younger children. 1 to April 1.
  2. Free the Trees Ages 10 and Up English ivy is a vigorous growing vine that is killing most of the trees on the Catonsville trails. As the ivy climbs in search of increased light, it engulfs and kills branches by blocking light from reaching the tree’s leaves (Another good research idea). CRTT needs volunteers to cut these vines and pull out the ivy.  Researching the best way to kill ivy is another good project.  All year long.
  3. Gulley Buster Ages 12 and Up Along the Short Line Trail, we need volunteers to clear the drainage ditches of leaves and limbs in late November to ensure gulleys take water away from the trail.  Need boots. November 1 to April 1.
  4. Tool for Trails All Ages – CRTT always needs tools. Tools get broken or lost frequently.  Organizing a tool collection (asking people to give old or duplicate tools) would be a great way to help.  We need rakes, shovels, pruners, clippers, gloves, bags and other tools.  We put hot pink tape on the tools so we can find them in woods.  Groups can decorate tools with bright colors for a fun project. All year long.
  5. Birdland All Ages At CRTT, we love creativity and we love birdhouses.  Several people have built and/or painted birdhouses and put them up along the trail.  Do a little research to determine the correct size and color of your birdhouse.  Make a plan to have them hung along the trail including determining how high off the ground the houses need to be.   All year long.
  6. Gutter Snipes – CRTT is very concerned about the environment including the watersheds. To this end, we maintain all the sidewalks and curbs near our trails to ensure that water is free to flow to the Patapsco River.  Another benefit is that our neighbors along the trail appreciate the cleaned curbs.  November 1 to April 1.
  7. Daffy Diggers – In the fall, we would like to plant daffodils along the trails. Diggers are needed to help plant bulbs. October and November.
  8. Volunteer at Trolley Festivus  – We need volunteers to help with serving beers, checking IDs, selling tokens and more.  Link will be available shortly.
